Reese
10/2009
Reese is a three year old Domestic Shorthair cat. Adopted from the Humane Society after being returned to them twice, she is a shy kitty. After being with me for a year and a half, she is finally starting to come downstairs when other people are in the house. Unfortunately, along with discovering how comfortable the couch is, she also found the doggy door. She started to sneak outside to go on adventures at night and would be waiting by the door in the morning for her breakfast. A few weeks ago, Reese didn't come back. I didn't find her at the Humane Society, and nobody in the neighborhood had seen her.
After about a week of looking, I walked around shaking Reese's treat jar (which usually always made her come running). From an abandoned garage came a loud meow and I discovered that Reese had fallen into the wall from the ceiling with no way to get out. With the help of a neighbor and a crowbar, some of the wood paneling was pried off so that Reese could be saved. Luckily, she did not come out limping and had no other injuries - aside from the fact that she smelled like mothballs. After a bath and a good meal, Reese was glued to my side all night, thankful to be home. The whole episode made me realize that even though she is vaccinated and on a monthly parasite preventative, it does not mean that she is safe to be outside.
