Bay East Pet of The Month

Tazia Ollendorf

7/2010

Animal lovers will have many pets throughout their lives.  But sometimes a special one comes along that touches our hearts--a kindred spirit that will never be forgotten.  Gina Ollendorf, a Bay East technician, adopted Tazia, a spirited Rottweiler, in 2005.  At 4 years old weighing in at close to 100 pounds, Taz was full of energy! Though she was a bit shy the first few days in her new home, Gina and Taz soon warmed up to each other and Gina's life would never be the same. Taz spent the majority of her time outside in the beginning, but soon became Gina's "baby" and spent most of her time indoors. Gina and Taz had a special bond.  Taz sensed when Gina was upset or not feeling well.  Taz loved everyone! Rottweilers can sometimes make people nervous, but Taz wasn't aware of that.  She didn't discriminate with her kisses! Adults, kids, strangers...everyone was Taz's friend! She was so excited to meet new people that sometimes people riding by on a bicycle would soon see a large Rottweiler in pursuit of them, just to say "hi". Her curious nature sometimes got her into trouble, however.  Taz loved to investigate (and eat) the food off the counter, or open the fridge door and help herself! Not only did she have a thing for junk food, playing with her squeaky toys was one of her favorite pastimes. Tazia was loyal, goofy, happy, strong-willed and had to sleep in the bed with Gina and refused to be kicked out! Sadly, in May of 2010, Tazia lost her battle with "mega esophagus", a condition that causes difficulty keeping food down that can lead to severe weight loss and malnutrition.  "I never thought I could be that close to a dog until Taz came into my life," Gina said while reflecting on their time together.  Taz will always have a special place in Gina's heart and the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her.
